Gorgeously Green

I am one of those people that loves the idea of going completely green. It's buy into the belief that I would be sooooo much healthier if I eat nothing but local and organic, and a better person if I use more natural cleaning products and so on and so on. I feel like I'm aware of the things I could and should be doing, but don't always do them. Like when I forget to take my reusable bags to the store with me- I can't even go grocery shopping without feeling guilty about taking the plastic bags that kill birds or something like that. Geez, those poor birds were depending on me!

It all started when I did an internship in college and one of my projects was working on a Keep America Beautiful campaign. This is where I learned that it takes 2 million years for a glass bottle to decompose. And this is where I learned about the number printed on the bottom of plastic products that tells you if it can be recycled.

Believe it or not, my college internship days were before the whole go green trendy thing had kicked off. Ironically enough, the internship was in my hometown, where they still to this day don't pick up recycling with your regular trash pick-up! I'm lucky to live in a place now where recycling is a piece of cake. We can throw EVERYTHING in our magical blue recycling trashcan and don't even have to sort out the cans from the paper anymore. Newspaper and junk mail, cereal and pasta boxes, spaghetti sauce jars, cans from veggies or soup, plastic salad dressing bottles, etc all go in the one blue trashcan. We roll it out to the road on our trash day and poof- it's recycled.

While I don't think I could go to the extremes of 365 Days Of Trash, recycling is an easy step that everyone should be doing by now. I knew I had come a long way when on vacation, I couldn't bare to see the gazillion water bottles we consumed thrown into the regular trash. Since I couldn't afford to buy a water filter and BPA free bottles for all of us, recycling was the next best thing. So we set up our own little recycling center and saved a rain forest or two by recycling tons of soda cans, water bottles, and glass beer bottles. Does this make me a treehugger? Or maybe a scuppie?

So the point of this post isn't to preach to you or spread my personal "green" guilt around. I'm hoping that it simply gets you thinking about the small things you can do. And since there are much more experienced treehuggers than me, here are some sights I've been following for a little green inspiration.

- Life Less Plastic

And to prove that I'm trying to walk the walk- I joined the Gorgeously Green 30 Day Pledge.

Make It Work...

...it's been so long since we've heard heard Tim Gunn mutter those three words! Project Runway kicks off their new season on Lifetime tonight! You may recall that there was some back and forth between Bravo and Lifetime as they worked out which channel would land the show. It was finally settled and we can all get our fashion fix tonight on Lifetime!

I'm especially excited about this season because someone I knew in high school will be competing! Carol Whitfield is a few years younger than me, and always did have quite a creative streak. I saw her last Christmas at my sister's party, and mum was certainly the word. We had NO idea that she had already filmed and been a part of Runway. We have our guesses on how things end up, but I can't wait to see for sure! What an honor for her to be a part of the show! Check out Carol's official info here.

Last summer, I watched a fellow Andersonian, Bailey Hanks, win MTV's Legally Blonde reality contest. I must say that having someone to personally cheer on makes these shows SO much more fun!

Playing Tourist

I usually reserve the touristy DC stuff for when I have out of town visitors. I should probably take advantage of the museums and such, but when you live here, it's hard to do!

The American History Museum was closed for a few years for renovations. It reopened in January (I think) and I haven't had a chance to see the new and improved version. So I braved the August heat and crowds of summer tourists to see it for myself. The favorite exhibits such as the American Presidency and America on the Move are still there.

I was immediately drawn to the Julia Child exhibit. It was a small exhibit, but packed with information for the kitchen/food lover! I didn't realize until later in the day, that Saturday would have been Julia Child's 97th birthday. I love how trendy Julia Child is these days!

Another impressive exhibit was on Abraham Lincoln. It's a must see!

Next up will hopefully be the National Portrait Gallery. I'm embarrassed to say that it's located just a few blocks from my office and I've never been!

BLAH

I'm going to just come out and say it- last week sucked! I try to keep things positive on here, which is one reason I decided not to blog more than I did last week...in the hopes that the black cloud would eventually blow over my head. My cell phone broke. My car broke- resulting in some expensive repairs. My vacation ended. I missed my family and all the fun we had. I returned to a weird work week. I still haven't seen Julie and Julia. Sounds like a bad country song, right? I was all around Out. Of. Sorts.

Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for an understanding boss that gave me no grief about having to come back to work a day late in order to tend to the car. I am grateful that the car was eventually fixed and I made it back safely. I am thankful that I got to catch up with some friends over the weekend. Seeeee- I am trying to be as optimistic as I can!

But yesterday, I was BEAT! I felt it when I woke up and decided right then that I wasn't going to do a thing all day. I pushed the cleaning, the errands, the laundry, and the gym to another day. I moved from my bed to the couch, which is where I stayed most of the day. I caught up on the new season of Real Housewives of Atlanta (I swear it's the only season of that show that I watch.) I also numbed my mind to the tunes of Nurse Jackie, US of Tara, and my roomate's Sex in the City DVDs.

A plus to having my roomates is that we've mastered the art of magazine sharing. Each of us has a few favorites that we buy and everyone benefits! I had People, Us Weekly, Glamour, and Real Simple to flip through.

I also geared up for last night's premier of Mad Men. It was the start of a really good TV week! Top Chef and Project Runway both start their new seasons this week! Time to set the TiVo! These shows should definitely tide me over until the end of September when TV is back in full swing.

So what else am I doing to snap me out of my post-vacation depression? Here is my 4 step plan for the week!

1. Jumping back on the wagon. I've neglected my diet and it's time to focus again!
2. Gym. I must go to the gym no less than 3 times this week. (I'm saying this publicly in the hopes that you'll hold me accountable!)
3. Time with friends. I already have plans Wed. and Thurs. night to catch up with two of my faves!
4. See Julie and Julia this weekend.

Beach Bums

Let's see......where do I start? Would you like to hear about my fabulous vacation that I hyped up on here a few weeks ago? Or the not so fabulous end to my vacation where my cell phone broke and I had car trouble, stranding me in Florence, SC for 27 hours or so?

I'm trying to forget about that last part, so I'm going with the vacation. Almost all of my mom's family was able to spend a week together at Edisto Beach in SC. (Ryan and Lindsey- we missed you!)

I started the vacation a day earlier than the rest of the fam and met my sister and brother-in-law in Charleston for a night. We had a blast downtown and I got to catch up with an old friend. Millicent and I go way back to middle school, went to church together, college together, and even dated brothers at one point. It's always fun to reminisce about the good ole days!

You know it's a good night when it ends like this....

The next day, we took a detour to see the Angel Oak Tree- Gorgeous!

Edisto is a rather secluded beach and is totally uncommercialized. There aren't a lot of restaurants or entertainment options. But that was just fine with us. My mom's cooking is way better than any restaurant anyway! We had a FULL menu of shrimp and grits, a fish fry, low country boil, roast beef, steak, and lots of delicious homemade sides. I wish I had taken pictures of the beautiful meals, but I was way too concerned about eating it!

We spent the days lounging on the beach...

...watching the dophins swim and play, and eating tomato sandwiches! (There's just NOTHING like a fresh mater on top of white bread lathered in Duke's mayo- truly an amazing southern creation.)

And we spent the nights playing Jenga, Checkers, Uno, card/board games, watching movies, and putting together a rather annoying jigsaw puzzle that was missing 3 pieces!

A sampling of the family photo shoot....

Say it with me- AWWWWWWWWW!

Getting crazy!

Beautiful sunset...

We took a few breaks from the beach- once to go to some local antique shops and to stock up on some local produce and shrimp. THE place to do this is called George and Pink's. It's a local favorite and has been featured in Southern Living several times.

You drive down a loooong dirt road....

And there it is!

My mom with Pink....

We took a break from the beach one day and headed to Charleston to have lunch and shop.

We had a great time soaking up the sun and enjoying each other's company. We all voted to make this a tradition!
